Workplace Culture Agreement
Because we care about animals and people, we invest in creating a workplace that is positive and rewarding for the people who work and volunteer here.
At Utah Humane:
- We welcome new staff and volunteers to our teams and cultivate diversity of identity, experience, skills, and thought to strengthen our teamwork.
- We refer to people and animals by preferred names and pronouns – animals are not ‘it’ and individual’s identities are respected.
- We assume that everyone has the same good intentions as we do which allows us to communicate openly with each other and our patrons.
- We resolve misunderstandings and problems directly, respectfully, and with the most appropriate person.
- We don’t allow gossip and complaints to undermine our trust and teamwork.
- We take responsibility for our actions and feelings – we show up on time, we clean up after ourselves, we communicate, and we follow through on commitments.
- We make decisions and take actions with our mission always in mind, asking first “What is in the best interest of the animals and people involved?”
- We are not just open to new ideas, we actively seek ways to be better, stronger, and more efficient as an organization.
- We put our time, money, and other resources toward the highest priorities with the understanding that our time is the most valuable resource of all.
- We look for resolutions rather than blame to be assigned when things go wrong.
- We give each other the grace and space needed to change and learn.
- We work hard and support rest and play for recovery and resilience.
- We celebrate successes loudly and recognize individual contributions, usually with unicorns, which are our symbol of appreciation for a job well done.
- We support each other through difficulty, usually with rainbows, which are our symbol of empathy and optimism.
- We take our work, not ourselves, seriously and inject humor and fun into all we do.
- We transparently share information to give context to organizational decisions as appropriate.
- We build on success and learn from failure and share all of it openly to create the future.
